Oppotunity Cost An Important Principle For Your Success
The concept of "opportunity cost" - sometimes also called "lost "opportunity lost" is most important.
When you stop to think about things more you begin to realize this concept can be applied in a multitude of ways in the course of daily life and can play a very important role in helping you organize your life, deal with priorities and achieve more on a day-to-day basis -especially when you if you want to get paid!
Basically, when you have a choice between two courses of action, and you choose one of the actions, then the benefit you would have gained from the other action can be regarded as your "opportunity cost"
Suppose you have a choice between buying a new car and paying for an operation that would save your life. If you choose the operation, then your "opportunity cost" is the car you didn't buy.
On the other hand, if you choose to buy the car and forego the operation, resulting in your death, then your "opportunity cost" is your life!
Taken a step further now: if you regularly apply this kind of thinking before making a purchase, investment or taking action of some kind before spending any money you could change your life completely by asking the 'just been paid' question!
Consider for a moment all those past actions which you now perhaps regret - the new shoes you didn't really need; the expensive evening with someone (who turned out not to be your type anyway), or the 'hot deal' you purchased which you later discovered you didn't really use anyway! If, as I am suggesting, you applied the "opportunity cost" principle each time you would possibly have made a different decision.
Today, I still agonize over a decision I made Ten years ago - when my life was in full-swing.
You could say I was moderately successful back then. I held a well-paid corporate position, and having just left a former employer and been paid all my superannuation contributions, I had a few thousand dollars at my disposal to (hopefully) build my wealth further. I had thought things through - based on what I understood at that time - and decided to make a couple of radical decisions.
The "opportunity cost" of the first decision was I should pay off my remaining mortgage for the family home. I did this having reasoned that the cost NOT to pay off the mortgage would have been greater because, over the remaining 20 years of the mortgage I would have continued paying huge weekly payments amounting to thousands upon thousands of dollars. On reflection that was not a good decision - it was a GREAT decision!
About the same time, still having some money left over, I decided to re-model part of the home to provide a small flat - downstairs. Now whilst the cost of construction and time taken to build was considerable, I reasoned that the "opportunity cost" would be that if I didn't complete the work then it might cost double that in the future by which time the opportunity had been lost! Once again, in this situation, money spent now saved further expense in the future but what was different about this decision was the fact that I now had a resource which would work for me. How's that you say? Well the answer to that lies in the simple fact that the flat proved to be a great income generator! In fact, over the past ten years, not only has it been fully-occupied, it has more than repaid the original investment - four times over - and of course has had a compounding effect on the value of the property overall! Another great decision.
What about the cost of "opportunity lost"?
I've experienced that too believe me, that has caused me great trouble over the past ten years! You see my third action taken ten years ago was to buy land close to my house for development purposes. however,everything went wrong some time after the initial purchase when I was starting to clear the land for building and invited a construction engineer to give me some advice.
In the course of walking over the land he noticed subsidence-a small drop in the land surface of about 150mm. We investigated further and after several weeks realized that this would add considerably to the cost of building our dream home. So this is when things went horribly wrong.In the final analysis, my money was lost and has never been recovered.
The "opportunity lost" was the chance to build a dream home which would allow me to rent out the original family home (including the Flat) and thus to have received on-going income during retirement (the answer to my 'just been paid' question). The"opportunity cost" was several thousands of dollars and more because co-incidental with this loss I also lost my well-paid job and thus the means by which I could recover my losses.
And so it is. In the past ten years I have seen both sides of the "opportunity cost" scanaio and I have suffered accordingly. However, when reflecting further, It's become abundantly clear that the first two decisions I made were in most cases my saviour!
Not only has the regular income from the Flat helped to pay weekly out-goings through worsening economic times, there was enough to make further improvements to the home which presented me with the chance to make further gains from boarding home-stay students.
As for the 'Land-buying saga', well I learned something from that too - which is one reason I am now in real estate sales. But in fact I learned much more from that mistake because I was forced to think more carefully about spending - since all my available capital had been spent leaving me virtually "cashless".
Just recently, having spent some 7-8 years trying to earn money online, I faced a situation which really tested my thoughts and beliefs. Something quite different to anything I have done before yet, at the same time something that caused me to call upon all the tough experiences I had to go through in the past ten years with regards to money, not being able to get finance and being out of work for several years. Once again I decided to apply the concept of "opportunity cost" and the 'just been paid' question.
This time it has been different - because of my hard-won experiences. I found I spent more time analyzing an online moneymaking opportunity just released by an online business I belong to for a year. I spent time doing my own 'due diligence ' - reasoning things out, checking asking questions etc. I tested the system - before I bought into it ! I "skilled myself up" at tasks I realized would be critical to earning 'fast-money' and built spreadsheets to show me WHAT the earning possibilities are and HOW I could benefit best from joining the program.
What I discovered was this. I am stronger for having made those past decisions (even the one that didn't work taught me much). I bought into the new moneymaking program with a vengeance - and I am now regarded as a 'Leader' within that group. When I ask the question "Have I just been paid?" I am watching my daily earnings increase - and I know just what to do with the money earned.
Yes! - compounding of money is one of the things I've learned about in the past ten years and now I've got it working in MY Favour!

I thought today I'd take a review of a blog entry I made last year -
very much related to wealthmanagement of my business.

Why I passed on a Golden chance!
Something occurred to me yesterday when I received an email
from a friend re his new online business. he didn't mention Customers!
You see just a couple of weeks ago, when he asked me "What
are you doing?" and "how's it all going? The timing was such I
decided to share my latest results.....as you do!
Of course you can guess what I received - an invitation to look
at his new home business ! So I did, after all, Hes a much-respected friend
and I value his commentary on such things.
Now without going into detail too much it seems to be a new
"Gold Coin" program. The core attribute of the business being
you buy gold coins and save them. You also recruit / refer others
and go about building a home business upon Gold coins - cost per
coin? Around $700 presently.
But wait a minute I thought, we're in a recession and its going to get worse - so it could make good sense. Didn't I hear that the price of Gold was going down recently? Of course, it's bound to go back up"
Then I thought some more, What about those MLM stats I recall
from all the due diligence we always talk about when assessing
such opportunities? Didn't I recall a figure something like," The
average network marketer recruits 2.4 people in their lifetime of
their business"! I did the numbers and I wasn't impressed.
You see my friend has (I think) overlooked a key factor which is
central to the success I enjoy in the opportunity which I presented
to him. Is this: BUYING CUSTOMERS Plain and simple!
Here's the secret. Can you imagine for one minute your Down lines Gold coins talking to and referring other Gold Coins? I know that sound silly but think about it. The real power in network marketing comes from the power of referral - not the perceived value of the product.
Who amongst you would not want to have CUSTOMERS who buy and buy again and again?
Will those buying Gold Coins at $700 buy again and again? Sure, some will. However, I also remember some advice I received from a Chinese girlfriend. She said, When the Chinese want to eat they look for a restaurant where lots of people go. They look for the
'path that others beat their door '- for that means the food must
be good and of reasonable price to attract the majority of people".
So what's all this got to do with the price of Fish? Nothing- but
most home businesses depend on having traffic, and 'the
numbers' to sustain it.
Again I thought, How much food could the average person BUY for $700 these days?" Answer - quite a bit but even the price
of food is going up at an alarming rate.
Question: " How many Gold coins at $700 each do you think the millions of people who've just lost their job and whove been living close to the 'bread line' for years will BUY?"
Question:" How about you?" Have you ever lost YOUR job? Have you ever faced a recession before? I'm 66 and consider myself to be lucky that I haven't really seen a recession like the 1930's - but people say we're in for one NOW! So what to do?
Well here are my thoughts.
Ten years ago I lost everything - during a minor recession - it was 1997 - the Korean Monetary crisis. I had 'huge debt to carry and overcome.
What I did was SOME DEEP THINKING!
It went something like this..........
I havent got any income or savings and I haven't got this week's rent...
I can't afford to eat like I used to - must cut back....
However, I must maintain my health and fitness so I can compete for work, to earn money, to survive!
What did I do?
I lived off my credit card and bought the best nutritional
supplements I could buy, recommended them to others so I
could earn income. I joined the local swimming pool and walked
there every day to swim 1000 metres, refresh myself, relax for
a few moments each day and reflect upon my progress.
It was very slow - but it worked!
After ten years I paid off my debt by learning to manage debt effectively. So much so, I am now again in debt but this time I am financing a business in which I BUY CUSTOMERS - who BUY PRODUCT for THEIR health!!
The difference between this business and the earlier one? I
am making money and I am doing so in ever-increasing amounts.
The company markets to, and finds the customers and acquires them - through a MAP process (Media Acquired Program).
I and my Ultimate Team partner with them and buy the customers in the process. The business is awesome! For that reason alone (and there are more) I recommend you look at it with me...
Fast forward to EASTER 2010...
Yes things have slowed a little but guess what. my stats show I doubled my money since joining a year ago. Moreover I've seen first-hand how new people have been attracted into the business - some via the Internet websites and others via the Telemarketing team at TriVita. What a great job they do! When you think about "wealthmanagement" those telemarketers manage my customer retention program like nothing I've experienced at any time in my career. Thank you!
On another note I shouldn't forget the MAPS - the Media Acquired leads which I obtain through my Affiliate relationship with the company.
When I first bought MAPS the exchange rate between New ZEaland dolar was about 0.55c so at $50.00 per Customer (NOT "Lead") it proved to be expensive. I soon figured out though that because of the wild fluctuations in the value of the Kiwi Dollar I could BUY Customers when the exchange rate was high (Currently 0.75c to 1 USD) or withdraw commissions when the rate was low. This turned out to be a valuable tool in wealthmanagement of my Trivita business.
Briefly this wealthmanagement process I've adopted for myself results in 'Bonus ' earnings: when the USD$ is high say 0.75c it costs me NZ $$66.67 each customers (very reasonable at $USD 50.00 each) but when the exchange rate drops to around 0.60c those same leads would cost me $83.30 ! that's 25% MORE. I now employ the method continuously always monitoring the exchange rate and scoring really well whatever happens!
